Learn how to use the RazoRock Plissoft Monster synthetic shaving brush for a rich, easy lather. Step-by-step guide for wet shavers.

Quick answer

Soak the synthetic bristles in warm water, shake off excess, load with shaving soap or cream, then lather on your face or in a bowl.

Why the Monster brush needs a slightly different technique

The RazoRock Plissoft Monster has a 26 mm knot, which is larger than most standard brushes. This means it can hold enough lather for 4–5 passes, but it also requires more soap or cream to load properly. If you underload, the lather will be thin and airy.

Because synthetic bristles dry quickly and don't absorb water like badger or boar, you only need a quick soak—not a long one. Over-wetting the brush can make the lather runny.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Soak the brush: Run the bristles under warm water for 10–15 seconds, or dip them in a bowl of warm water. Shake off the excess water gently—the brush should be damp, not dripping. Synthetic bristles don't hold water like natural hair, so a quick soak is enough.
  2. Load the brush with soap or cream: If using a hard soap, swirl the damp brush over the soap for 20–30 seconds in a circular motion. If using a cream, scoop a small amount (about the size of an almond) into a bowl and work it into the brush. The Monster's large knot needs a generous load—don't be shy. Underloading is the most common mistake. You should see a thick, pasty proto-lather on the tips.
  3. Build the lather: Move the brush to your face (face lathering) or a separate bowl (bowl lathering). Add a few drops of water at a time while working the brush in circular motions. The Plissoft fibers will quickly whip the soap into a creamy, slick lather. Stop when the lather has a yogurt-like consistency and holds its shape. Add water gradually—too much at once will make the lather collapse.
  4. Apply the lather and shave: Paint the lather onto your face using gentle, sweeping strokes. The large knot covers more area quickly, so you may need fewer passes. Re-wet the brush slightly between passes if the lather dries out. The Monster holds enough lather for 4–5 passes, so you likely won't need to reload.
  5. Rinse and dry the brush: Rinse the brush under warm running water until all soap residue is gone. Gently squeeze out excess water from the bristles, then shake the brush to remove more moisture. Store it upright in a well-ventilated area to air dry. Synthetic brushes dry much faster than natural hair—usually ready to use again within a few hours.
